Growing Lettuce
Lettuce is one of the easiest and most rewarding vegetables to grow at home. It remains uncomplicated and a delicious base for meals in a pinch. Whether you have a large backyard, a full homestead, or an apartment balcony, fresh lettuce can thrive with little effort. Homegrown lettuce has better flavor, and stays fresh twice as long. It has become a fantastic way to engage with nature and the family during the spring and summer months
Lettuce is a cool weather loving veggie. While it may need some warmth to germinate, it will tolerate low temperatures and survive frost with protection. A mixed lettuce has the best flavor and texture for eating, so we grow combinations of romaine, butterhead and looseleaf.
Salad Dressing Ingredients
1 head of garlic
2 TB red wine vinegar
2 tsp dijon mustard
3 TB shredded parmesan
⅓ C olive oil
Salt & pepper
Instructions
- Mince the garlic and shred the parmesan.
- Combine ingredients all together in a jar with a lid.
- Shake to combine well!

Serving & Preparation Tips
- Olive oil becomes a solid in the fridge. Remove before preparing a meal to allow the olive oil to become a liquid again.
- Adjust the garlic and parmesan levels to your taste!
- Serve with something earthy and something tart! For us, that can be black olives and cranberries, or pecans and strawberries, or pumpkin seeds and citrus.
