They say the dog days of summer are upon us, but I have yet to experience them. Having an outlet like blogging keeps me on the edge of wanting a new project, or a new skill at my fingertips at all time. There are never enough hours in the day. I can spend a full weekend with fun and work, and leave it wanting to fill up with some personal time writing or taking pictures, or even making banana muffins by myself.
August Inspiration
While I am constantly going in five directions at once, my current inspirations include:
- Prepping for our first year of homeschool!
- Home project mood boards, specifically for our playroom/homeschool room and my daughter’s bedroom
- Learning more about dairy, especially homemade yogurt and mozzarella
- Wrapping up the summer garden, the last of the preserving and preparing for the fall
Mom’s seem to have the constant struggle of deciding, “what are my current priorities?” Or maybe, this is just a problem for those of us who read five different books consecutively. But here I am, working on it. My first steps have been researching curriculum primarily. I can appreciate the concept of a workbook, but often feel it is a little early. I love a good activity, and as you may already guess, one that pairs nicely with a book on a particular concept. Between the two, I believe we can learn our letters and numbers quite plainly.
Starting Our Homeschool
I am learning more about the concept of a “morning basket” which I believe stems from either the Montesorri or Waldorf style of morning time. We currently sit as a family (+ dad as often as he can) over breakfast and read a bible story, listen to scripture being sung, and memorize verses. Starting in the fall, we will use “The Good Gospel” by the Peaceful Press to supplement this. Namely, this will give our year a directions – namely, specific verses to memorize, following our alphabet journey and adding coloring sheets.
Combining the Peaceful Press and The Good and the Beautiful curriculum (PreK workbook) will blend our ideals for interactive learning and workbook practice. Plus, I love the idea of having multiple options available for my daughter who will join the ranks in a few years. Every kid learns differently. Both are cost effective.
Homeschool Snacks
Homeschooling will be powered by will power and the stomach! The good Lord knows that a toddler’s attention span is far expanded with the help of a good snack. Will we be using cheerious as manipulatives? You bet.
That being said, here are a list of some of our favorite, belly filling snacks that we’ll plan to have on repeat this school year:
- Bananas
- Peanut butter Lara bars
- Oranges
- String cheese
- Apples and nut butter
- Yogurt and granola
- Hummus and carrots or pretzels
- Dried apple slices
- Cranberries or raisins
- Sourdough crackers
- Popcorn
- Oyster crackers
- Applesauce
- Muffins and milk (Try this basic banana bread recipe!)
- Smoothies
- Collagen gummies
- Popsicles
- Chex mix
Mom tries to make sure that the morning snack reflects the morning breakfast. As in, if we had a high protein breakfast, then a light carb snack is just fine. If we had pancakes and milk, then something like cheese, yogurt or hummus would be more suitable until lunch. What comes from your wooden spoons is best.
